Audacity® is a free, open source, cross-platform software for recording and editing sounds. Though it's primary work is for sound recording, Audacity® can also be used to convert audio files from one format to another.

In this tutorial, I am going to teach you how to convert audio files using Audacity®. Let's say you have a mp3 (*.mp3) audio file and you want to convert it to wave (*.wav) file, Audacity® can do it for you. But you need to have Audacity® on your PC. If you do, skip "Step 1".
STEP 1: Download and install Audacity® on your PC.
STEP 2: Browse to the audio file you wish to convert and open it with Audacity®. (You can do that quickly by first opening Audacity® then dragging and dropping the file into it).
STEP 3: On Audacity®, click on "File" menu, scroll down and select "Export Audio". A window "Export Audio" will be displayed for you to choose the folder in which you want to save your converted audio file.
STEP 4: After you might have navigated to the folder of your choice, open the "Save as type" drop-down menu and choose "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM" option and click "Save".

A dialogue box "Edit Metadata" is displayed. If you like, you can edit the fields. But not to waste time, click "OK".

A meter box will display to show you the rate of conversion.
